Is Veganuary Worth It?

It’s the New Year! The vast majority of people are trying new things and on a health kick, looking for new ways they can look after themselves. You’ve probably heard of Veganuary but just in case you live under a rock, what is it? Well simply put it’s an amalgamation of the two words Vegan and January so essentially it’s a month of abstaining from animal products (sorry if that was disappointing).

Veganism has gained vast popularity over the past decade with more people choosing to consume less animal products, usually this is a personal choice and could be for many reasons including; ethical, health, personal preferences or environmental reasons.

If you’ve spent long enough on social media then you will know there’s a negative stereotype around the people who choose a vegan lifestyle (that they’re loud social justice warriors) but we don’t like stereotypes over here! Do what feels right for you, always.

If you’re thinking of trying out let’s have a look at the benefits of a vegan diet:

1. Health Benefits

  • Nutrient-Rich Diet: Vegan diets tend to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • Heart Health: Vegan diets are often lower in saturated fats and cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease.
  • Weight Management: Studies suggest vegans tend to have lower body mass indexes (BMIs), as plant-based foods are often lower in calories but higher in fiber.
  • Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: A vegan diet may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers (e.g., colorectal cancer).
  • Better Digestive Health: The high fiber content improves digestion and supports gut health.
  • Improved Skin: Plant-based diets rich in antioxidants and water content may enhance skin health.

2. Environmental Benefits

  • Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Vegan diets have a smaller carbon footprint compared to diets reliant on animal agriculture.
  • Conservation of Water and Land: Producing plant-based foods typically uses less water and land than raising livestock.
  • Reduced Pollution: Avoiding animal agriculture reduces water contamination and deforestation associated with farming practices.
  • Biodiversity Protection: Cutting down on animal farming helps preserve natural habitats and protect wildlife.

3. Ethical Benefits

  • Animal Welfare: A vegan diet avoids the exploitation, suffering, and killing of animals for food.
  • Alignment with Values: Many people choose veganism to live in harmony with their ethical beliefs about compassion and non-violence.

4. Economic Benefits

  • Cost-Effective Staples: Staples like beans, rice, and lentils are affordable and nutrient-dense.
  • Less Medical Costs: A healthier diet can lead to fewer medical bills in the long run.

5. Social and Community Benefits

  • Growing Accessibility: With the rise of vegan-friendly products, restaurants, and communities, adopting this lifestyle is easier than ever.
  • Encourages Mindful Eating: Being vegan often fosters a closer connection to food and where it comes from.

While the benefits are substantial, it’s important to plan a vegan diet carefully to ensure it’s nutritionally balanced, particularly for nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Now you’ve had a read through, outweigh the pros and cons, see if you fancy giving it a go! Personally every time I’ve tried it I’ve always felt the benefits, you just need to be careful to get the nutrients that is easily accessible from meat & fish. If you’re going to try it, good luck and let us know how you get on!
